Oil painting is a form of painting in which pigments are mixed with oil solvents (generally linseed oil, poppy oil, etc.) and painted on various absorbent canvases, panels, etc., and then dried to preserve their luster for a long time.
Characteristics of oil painting
Oil painting is the easiest way to blend tones or colors, and it can be divided into transparent, translucent and opaque painting methods. The brush is made in four fixed shapes: round, flat, short flat and fan-shaped. A palette knife for oil painting is a convenient tool for blending viscous oil paints. Standard canvases are made of linen, coated with a white powder base (Gesso), oil or acrylic, and stretched over a wooden frame. A varnish is usually applied to the finished painting to protect it from atmospheric erosion, rubbing and dirt accumulation.
History of Oil Painting
Oil painting began to mature in Flanders in the early 15th century, building on the two early European painting methods of Fresco Secco and Tempera. Through the use of the Van Eyck brothers and later masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian, it was perfected and became a type of painting with great expressive ability and extremely scientific use of techniques. It can be colored directly at once or in multiple layers, and allows overlay corrections during the painting process, as well as special effects of color changes through brush strokes.
