What are prints?
Printmaking refers to works that have been reproduced many times through printing, and the process of making prints has undergone constant renewal and development. Here we introduce four main methods of printmaking: etching, lithography, screen and woodcut.
Etching prints: belonging to a kind of intaglio printing, the pattern is etched on a metal plate with a protective layer (usually a wax layer) with an etching needle, and then the metal plate is soaked with acid. The metal exposed after engraving is corroded by the acid, while the rest of the plate is still covered by the protective layer. The longer the plate is soaked in the acid, the deeper the dent in the engraving will be. After cleaning the engraved plate, ink is applied to it and cleaned again, leaving only the ink inside the engraved lines. At this point, the metal plate is wrapped with wet paper and a layer of protective cloth, and after the paper is squeezed through the etching machine to make full contact with the ink in the etchings, a print is made.
Lithography: A greasy medium - usually a special lithographic crayon or greasy ink - is used to draw on the lithographic plate. The lithography is treated with a chemical solution so that only the patterned areas attract ink, while the blank areas attract only moisture. The ink is applied to the lithographic plate with a roller, making sure that the ink adheres only to the image. Finally, the lithographic plate is placed on a lithographic press, covered with damp paper and cardboard, and the design on the plate is transferred by applying an even force with a pressure bar.
Silkscreen prints: The design is engraved on a sheet of plastic film, made into a stencil and then framed. The frame comes with a layer of fine mesh that covers the stencil during framing, forming a layer of "screen". A sheet of paper is placed between the fine mesh and the stencil, and the ink is pushed into the stencil from above with a rubber squeegee. In addition to stencils, photographic images can also be printed with photosensitive gelatin by screen technology. Screen printing had a crucial influence on the work of Pop artists, represented by Andy Warhol.
